The healthy-homes and building rules require working smoke alarms within 3 metres of every bedroom door (or in each room where someone sleeps), and on each level of a multi-storey home. For rentals, landlords must provide compliant alarms and tenants must keep them working.
Current standards call for photoelectric smoke alarms (better at detecting smouldering fires) with either a long-life 10-year battery or hard-wired. The old 9-volt-battery ionisation alarms are out of step with the rules.
Long-life battery photoelectric alarms meet the rules and are easy to fit. Hard-wired interconnected alarms (where one alarm triggers them all) are the gold standard — when smoke is detected anywhere, every alarm sounds, giving everyone more time. We install and interconnect hard-wired alarms as part of wiring and renovation work.
FAQ
At least one working alarm within 3m of each bedroom door (or in each sleeping room) and on every level. Rentals must have compliant photoelectric alarms.
Long-life battery photoelectric alarms meet the rules. Hard-wired interconnected alarms are safer because they all sound together — ideal during a build or rewire.
